I did not! It just turned out to be a particularly bad month to do this, this year.

LOL I assume you mean, who won this year's 2010 NaNo?

I signed up so I could see the forums, but I didn't attempt this year. I hate attempting and then throwing the towel in midway (I've done that the past two years). But I know there are a number of PubYe'ers who crossed that line, or will soon!

I did but I am intending to polish my NaNo2006 for publishing instead.

That's a great idea - both for letting 2010 stew for a while, and to get back to an older passion. Good luck!

Well, I did, just, and just this morning!

Reba wrote:

I did the same thing, Reba. Both times I started a new story I had no particular interest in.
Two years ago, I gave up on an non-researched sort of historical tale at ~37k, don't remember exactly why.

And last year, it was an idea my son gave me on the 31st of October at a quarter to twelve at night, so I ran with that a little, in English even, but I abandoned it very soon.

So, this time, I became a Nano-rebel and took up a real historical novel (research and all) I've been working on for several years, off and on.
Last spring I became totally blocked on it and I was hoping to undo that blockage in the Nano-excitement.
That actually worked quite nicely!

I verified yesterday with 50,080! It was great to complete my NaNo again, because I've done NaNoWriMo 4 times and I've only completed on my second and fourth years. Actually...my NaNoNovel isn't completed yet; the 50K is only about a third of the whole book!

Reba, I'm with you. I hate throwing in the towel midway, it's a terrible feeling, but sometimes I'll start and I either run out of steam on the story or my schedule becomes my worst enemy.

I won, for the fifth straight time. Final word count: 57,213. I didn't feel the motivation to do anything more after the 25th, so there was no Panic Time and I didn't beat last year's 85K record. Still, I won, with the main project to which everything that came before was just a prequel (and turned out to be just a practice run)...

Pen - are you doing FiMo or another challenge to work on the remaining 100k? Or are you taking a rest for the end of the year madness? Congrats on winning this year!

Dennis - well done on winning, too. This one turned out to the be the "real thing", huh? How exciting!!!

This story can stew for another year or three while I write other stuff. I have written it in 50K "volumes" since I started doing NaNoWriMo in 2003, so NaNo2003, NaNo2008 and NaNo2010 ... it can be finished later.

End of year is going to be devoted to decompressing myself and re-reading NaNo2006 in prep for polishing it next year.

I won! But now I'll let it rest a bit while I get back to NaNovel '09...

I won! And I'm actually pretty happy things went as they did.

My plan going into NaNo was to finish up some fanfic that have lain fallow for a while (I felt VERY guilty about them). I struggled with that through ten thousand words and it REALLY wasn't working. So I grabbed an old story I'd meant to get to work on someday, and went. Ended up with a real mess, but enough thought and effort put into re-envisioning that it's viable again. I doubt I'd have put in the work if I hadn't needed something NOW I could do for NaNo (meaning, I could toss everything I wrote before and just start over.)

This month? I'm gonna play till the 18th, if I can. (I'm terrible at writing breaks. >_> ) Maybe I'll poke a bit at that fanfic, but mostly I intend to laze about, writing-wise. On the 18th my winter break begins (I work at a school) and I'll spend the next two weeks madly editing the next book to be published. I have to have it to reviewers in June, and I want to go through it at least twice before then!

Mage, welcome! I didn't see where you introduced yourself. I'll say hi there too when I come across it. XD

HI PEN!! Welcome back!

I won this year. Yay! And, as usual, it's not done. So, I'm doing the NaNoFiMo as well in the hopes of getting there.

C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-L-A-T-I-O-N-S EVERYONE!!! ... all who started, finished, met goals ... & those who did not, for whatever reason(s) ... including those who chose to opt-out, but still played an important part in the drama as cheerleaders & master "encouragers" -- saying just the right thing, when we needed it. Thank you!

I closed with about 35K words. I wasn't surprised ... and was only a little disappointed. I had tried writing during the last half of 'PubYe's Warm Up, but didn't get more than 700 words before I was waylayed by another blast from the past that suddenly blew back into my life. Those few words were very useful, tho'. They showed me how out of shape I'd become -- no shape to finish a 'WriMo on time. That was for sure. So, while my hopes were strong, my expectations weren't very high on Nov. 1st. I think I might've made it, tho', (barely) if another blast out of my past hadn't made tracks thru' my life in the middle of Nov. Timing can be everything. Anyway ...

I'm very glad I did it. Helped me get my writing juices flowing, again. It was much better than I'd done since I "won" in 2004 & 2005. Definite progress was made. As they say, "It's all good."

Take care, ya'll!

My first time and I won. I got a novel done which I have wanted to do for more than a year, so I am happy. But looking at some of the comments above about not finishing the work I am a bit worried I will be the same. It is a 1st draft and it is naff. Good story and stuff, but naff and needs another 15 grand to be a novel really.
So what does this site do to get you to finish the thing?

@Reba: Thanks! It feels good to be working on the original again. However, I still intend to whip my '07 NaNo into publishable shape. I'm already plotting my strategy for its final EdMo.

@Steve: There's actually other WriMos you can do. Right now I'm doing National Novel Finishing Month (NaNoFiMo). After that, there's JanNoWriMo. Me, I'm working on a novel series, so I intend to get the most out of FiMo and JanNo. One of these may be just the thing you need.

I didn't win, but that was kind of deliberate. I declared myself a NaNo Rebel so I could work on a WIP, and I made the decision early on that I wasn't going to run the WIP off the rails (for the third time...) just to win. So one weekend I did a Frankenstein job on everything I'd written during NaNo up to that point, which set me back. I also proceeded more slowly and did a lot more planning than usual. But I have 25K words that I'm reasonably happy with, and I've written more on this WIP than any previous attempt. That's a "win" to me. ;)

@Steve: We nag you incessantly. And some of us *cough*one of us*cough* has been known to threaten lagging writers with fish-thwappings.
